Kauai Hawaii - Kalalau Hanakapiai Hike Na Pali Coast

The Na Pali cost hike, on the Kalalau trail to Hanakapiai Falls is one of the best hikes on the island of Kauai.  You get to experience the beautiful Na Pali Cost in the best way possible.  The trail will lead you on a hike amongst pristine nature, with a halfway point at gorgeous Hanakapiai  beach.  You then continue inland along a stream to the the Hanakapiai Falls.

The trail starts at the Ke’e beach, which is a gorgeous beach, very popular with snorkelers.  The entire Kalalau trail is 11 miles along the Na Pali cost. The first two miles take you the the Hanakapiai beach (pictured below).  At that point you can either continue forward for the 9 additional miles (which requires a permit and most likely an overnight stay) or you can turn and hike inland, just under 2 miles to the thrilling Hanakapiai Falls.  The Na Pali Coast – Hanakapiai Beach and Hanakapiai Falls is our suggested hike, featured below.

The entire hike from Ke’e Beach to Hanakapiai Beach and then to Hanakapiai Falls is about 4 miles each way, with a few ascendents and descents, which are particularly tiring on the way back.  The trail is fairly easy to follow, with a well established path all the way through.  However the hike is strenuous and should only be attempted by hikers in good physical condition.  It is also a nature trail, with stream crossings, rugged terrain and steep sides of the Na Pali coast and no railings, so be careful.  Make sure you wear comfortable shoes and bring plenty of water, as there is no spot to replenish along the way.  Also, you spend quite a bit of time in direct sun, so don’t forget sunscreen.  Most people also start the hike in the early morning, to give themselves plenty of time to return during daylight.

The Kalalau – Hanakapiai Falls hike is what Hawaii is all about.  On the onset the views of the Na Pali coast are just stunning, with nature and tropical greenery all around.  It is one amazing site after another.  The beach halfway through offers a nice spot to strech out and relax before continuing.  However swimming is strongly Not advised as dangerous unseen currents have been reported, having swept numerous people out to sea and unfortunately their death.  Enjoy the beautiful scenery and relax before continuing inland.

The second half of the trail is a beautiful hike inland, through a Hawaiian tropical forest.  You follow the stream all the way to the waterfall, and on the way encounter many interesting plants, trees and rock formations.  The end results, the Hanakapiai Falls, is a very tall, postcard worthy waterfall.  It is a stunning setting that defines Kauai’s natural beauty.  Some people take a dip in the waterfall pool, if you decide to do that as well, be careful as loose rocks coming down the waterfall can cause sever damage.  Make sure you give yourself enough time to return in daylight, as navigating the trail at night is dangerous.

We absolutely loved the Na Pali Coast – Hanakapiai Fall hike.  The natural beauty, beech and waterfall, define what Hawaii and Kauai in particular is all about.  Hope you enjoy it too!
