Kauai Hawaii - Pihea Kalalau Valley

If you are looking for a hike with amazing scenic views of Kauai, then the Phiea – Alaka’i Swamp hike will definitely not disappoint.  First reaction, why would I want to hike a swamp?  Well its not your traditional swamp and the journey, along with the incredible views will leave you breathless.

The tail is located in the Waimea Canyon State Park and the hike starts at the end of the Canyon road, where you will reach a parking lot and can head to the Pu’u o Kila Lookout.  There you get you first sight of the magnificent valley views from the top of the ridge.  The view of the Kalalau Valley extending into the ocean is breathtaking.  One the other side of the ridge, you will see the lushness and greenery of Kauai.

You can now continue down the Phiea Trail, and start your hike.  We recommend taking the Pihea Trail for just under 2 miles, until you reach the Alaka’i Swamp Trail intersection.  At that point head left on the Alaka’i Swamp Trail for 2 miles, where you will reach the end of the cliff at the gorgoues Kilohana lookout.  The Kilohana lookout will present magnificent views of Hanalei Bay.  The entire trail is very clear to follow, and even though some parts of it are laid out with a wooden boardwalk, there are some steep elements which will require a bit of physical endurance.  Wear good shoes, make sure you bring plenty of water as you are on top of a ridge in direct sunlight for parts of it.  Also, remember this is a nature trail, with steep cliffs, so be Careful and don’t get too close to the edge.

The first of the hike, Pihea Trail, will present you with steep, yet marvelous terrain.  It almost seems like you’re traveling another planet.  However its all part of the natural wonder of Kauai.  The valley views from this part of the trail are simply amazing.  About a mile and half on the Pihea Trail you will reach the Pihea Vista.  There is a short steep climb to get to it but you are rewarded with a very nice view of the valley and Kauai.  Shortly after the Pihea Vista is where the wooden boardwalk will start.  You will encounter it on and off through the remaining Pihea trail and some of the wetter regions of the swamp.  They really make the hike much easier to get through.

Once you reach the Alaka’i Swamp Trail intersection, take a left (heading east) and continue on the the Kilohana lookout.  The Alaka’i swamp is not your typical swamp.  It is after all located on top of a mountain.  There are some wet and muddy areas, however you have the boardwalk over them.  Majority of the Alaka’i Swamp Trail is very open with tropical bushes, shrubs and fern all around you.  You also get plenty of direct sunlight, so don’t forget your sunscreen.

After about 2 miles on the Alaka’i Swamp trail, you reach the end of the cliff at the Kilohana lookout.  The views of the ocean, Hanalei Bay and the surrounding valleys are stunning.  They will make you forget about any fatigue and more then reward you for your efforts.  After you take your pictures and take in enough of the views, its time to head back.  On the way back, you have the option of going a different route at the Pihea – Alaka’i Swamp intersection, however that means you will need to figure out a way to get back to your car at the beginning of this hike.  This is an amazing hike that will leave you with memories to cherish for a long time.
