Kauai Weather

In general, Kauai’s weather is mild and pleasant, often warm but never truly hot. The island is situated to take advantage of the northeastern trade winds, which keep it from developing the sometimes oppressive heat and humidity of other tropical regions. Along the coasts, the temperature ranges from 72 to 82 degrees annually. Temperatures are a little cooler in the mountainous interior, usually about 10 degrees lower. Humidity is generally high, but the steady breeze prevents it from becoming unbearable.

Kauai also gets a lot of rain, accounting for its lush plant growth. The wettest season is in the winter and early spring, between November and March. Mount Waialeale, in the center of the island, is sometimes touted as the rainiest spot on earth, getting an average of 444 inches of rain a year. However, most of the rain falls inland, so you rarely have to worry about your beach vacation getting rained out.

On the coasts, average rainfall can be 30 inches a year or less. Most rain falls on the northern and eastern coasts, where humid ocean air is blown ashore by the trade winds. These areas also tend to be cloudier then the rest of the island, so if you’re a sun worshiper, you may want to go elsewhere. The ocean air loses its moisture as the wind pushes it up the mountains, so the southern coast is much drier and the western coast is almost a desert, with only 5 inches of rainfall annually.

Kauai rarely sees extended rainstorms. Most rain falls in brief showers, especially at night. One exception is the kona storms that occasionally crop up during winter. These tropical cyclones come to Hawaii from the west or south and bring high winds, heavy rain and hail, and powerful surf and can linger in the area for a week or more. While these storms have a major impact on Kauai weather, they only arrive infrequently.
