Kauai’s northern shore is notorious for rough, difficult water. That’s one of the reasons Anini Beach is such a unique spot. The water at Anini is shielded by an enclosing reef, producing a calm, warm lagoon that’s almost as safe and easy as a backyard swimming pool. Anini has the usual amenities including showers and restrooms, but no lifeguard is on duty.

The water at Anini is generally extremely clear. This clarity makes Anini a great place to dive and snorkel as well as swim, especially since the calm water also attracts many fish, including parrot fish, triggerfish, and other local species. Dangerous rip currents may form near the reef when the surf outside is high, so be aware of the conditions, but Anini can give you underwater experiences like nothing else. The water ranges from only four or five feet deep on one side of the beach to over 100 feet on the other.

Anini Beach is also a popular site for windsurfers, and you can rent a board and take windsurfing lessons from the local experts. The cliffs above the beach are dotted with the mansions and vacation homes of the rich and famous, so you never know who you might see in the area.
